Four Reasons Why You May Be Hesitant About Leaving Your Job

In October 2022, Comrise launched a LinkedIn poll, asking our audience what factor has made them hesitant about leaving their jobs. With over 280+ responses, we received valuable feedback from professionals who just can’t seem to pull the trigger on pursuing new positions.

It’s fairly common for professionals to have feelings of fear and doubt, especially when it comes to pursuing a job search. The mental toll these feelings have on you can be more stressful than the job hunt itself. Let’s narrow down four reasons why you may be hesitant about leaving your job and what you can do.

#1: Difficulty dealing with change

According to our LinkedIn poll, 29% of respondents said the factor that has held them back the most was their difficulty dealing with change. Whether you have been with an organization for one year or ten, it can be tough leaving behind everything you know. However, if you’re not fulfilled with your current job, don’t let your fear of change hold you back. Sometimes, the greatest opportunities arise from stepping outside of your comfort zone.

What to do: Do research, embrace change, and adopt a support system. Oftentimes, fear of change comes from the “unknown”. If you are certain you want to change jobs, start by doing research on roles you’d be most interested in. This will help your job hunt feel more exciting and comfortable. You will also be more inclined to embrace the change as you apply and receive interviews. Don’t forget to lean on a trusted recruiter, friend, or other network connections that can provide support along the way.

#2: No time for a job search

The most popular factor amongst the responses from our audience is having no time for a job search. This factor comes to no surprise as the majority of people have demanding lives and things to consider, such as family and other personal responsibilities.  If you can find a fair balance, we encourage you to take a few steps forward!

What to do: We understand that it might feel like mission impossible to fit a job search in your busy schedule. However, consider making a solid plan. Begin by planning out your daily activities and figuring out where you may have 15-30 minutes to dedicate to yourself. Little steps are steps nonetheless, so go at a pace that works best for you. If you need additional help, find a recruiter who will be there for you every step of the way. A recruiter’s responsibility is to help people find their next best job opportunity, so they’ll ensure your resume looks sharp and will locate several opportunities where you would be a perfect fit.

#3: Current pay/salary

According to 23% of respondents in our LinkedIn poll, the biggest factor for them is their current pay/salary. Regardless of the work environment or corporate culture, some professionals value compensation above all else, and we understand. They may already be paid relatively well and fear they won’t find jobs that pay just as much, or better.

What to do: First and foremost, don’t let the fear of not being paid as much or better stop you from seeking out new opportunities. Be confident in yourself, your skills and work experience, and make sure to set salary expectations. Conduct industry research on how much professionals like yourself are making. From there, be transparent with potential employers on what you expect so that any new roles you consider will benefit you exponentially. Remember, setting the standard upfront will be key, so don’t feel like you can’t chase after your goals!

#4: Lack of qualifications

Lastly, the least common factor amongst poll respondents is their lack of qualifications. It’s pretty normal to feel like you might not stand out amongst the crowd or that you haven’t had enough experience to move onto potentially better roles. This may vary from industry to industry, but there are a few things you can do to sharpen your skills.

What to do: LinkedIn is a great place to network and find courses or certifications at little to no cost. Differentiate yourself by dedicating time for professional development on a weekly basis. In addition, LinkedIn allows for endless networking, which can lead you to other professionals who are willing to chat with you. LinkedIn aside, you can find tons of resources online that will help expand your skill set, so don’t fret!
