Flying Tesla Roadster Ignites Airspace Economy Revolution

June 24, 2024

Tesla Roadster’s Flying Claim

On June 15th, Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted on X that Tesla’s new Roadster can fly. However, he did not reveal other details. We still don’t know if it will actually fly, for how long, or when it will be available. Despite the lack of details, this news has sparked global excitement. People are now imagining the future possibilities of automotive technology.

Roadster’s Acceleration and Space X Involvement

Earlier this year, Musk announced that the new Roadster would accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH (about 96.56k/hr) in less than one second. Musk also revealed that Space X will be involved in Tesla’s car development, and some people think that the new Roadster may have to ability to fly. However, most people believe that this is due to this amazing acceleration of the vehicle with the help of Space X’s equipment.

Features of the Upcoming Tesla Roadster

The upcoming Tesla Roadster is a joint project between Tesla and Space X. It will be ready for design and production by the end of this year. Musk revealed that the new car will have the Space X suite. This includes ten small rocket cold air thrusters. These thrusters can theoretically achieve short-distance jumps or levitation. Additionally, they will improve the vehicle’s acceleration, top speed, braking, and cornering abilities.

Emergence of Low-Altitude Economy

In fact, under the general trend of carbon neutrality, the low-altitude economy has gradually emerged, and the industry has thus attracted a series of head power batteries to enter the game, and Tesla’s Roadster is a good example. Not only so, XiaoPeng announced at the 2024 CES that the split flying car will open reservations in the fourth quarter of 2024, and plans to start mass production and delivery in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Global Low Altitude Airspace Economy Developments

The Low Altitude Airspace Economy includes a wide range of products. These products include drones, electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing vehicles (eVTOL), helicopters, and traditional fixed-wing aircraft. In the past, strict low altitude control limited the development and application of flying cars. However, the situation has changed in recent years. Globally, the US Federal Aviation Administration, the European Aviation Safety Agency, and the Civil Aviation Administration of China have approved policies. These policies provide positive guidance for the development of the Low Altitude Airspace Economy industry.

In China, many provinces have opened to the testing of this industry. In 2021, Hunan province became China’s first all-area low-altitude flight pilot province. Soon after, Jiangxi and Anhui provinces joined the national low-altitude reform pilot provinces. As policy opens up, the prospect of flying cars is gaining more recognition. Research institutions predict the number of flying cars will reach 23,000 worldwide by 2030. By 2040, this number will grow to 430,000. In China, the Low Altitude Airspace Economy industry will create new output value, estimated to reach between 3 trillion to 5 trillion CNY.

Challenges in the Low Altitude Airspace Economy

However, despite the huge potential, the Low Altitude Airspace Economy industry still faces some challenges and bottlenecks, such as the lack of mature scenarios and the realization of high-frequency applications. In order to realize the real commercialization and popularization of flying cars, it is necessary to continue to strengthen technological innovations, the improvement of regulatory policies and guidance of market demands.
