Hybrid Work on the Rise: How IT Roles are Adapting to a New Balance

11月 8, 2024

In Staffing Industry Analysts’ 2024 Temporary Worker Survey, data shows a significant shift in remote work trends among temporary IT professionals. In 2023, 58% of temporary workers in computer and mathematical occupations reported working entirely remotely, while another 28% worked in hybrid setups. Altogether, 86% of these professionals experienced at least some remote work, a strong indicator that flexible work remains a critical factor in the sector.

However, the fully remote trend has been decreasing, dropping from 74% in 2021 to 63% in 2022, and continuing the decline in 2023. Instead, the balance has tipped toward hybrid arrangements, which have reached a peak, with 31% of temporary IT workers now working partly onsite and partly remote, the highest level recorded over the last two years. On average, IT workers report spending 21.9 hours weekly on remote assignments, equating to nearly 2.7 days per week.

While companies have tightened remote work policies, hybrid models remain essential for staffing firms and clients to attract top talent. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that in 2024, remote work is still highly valued in tech, with the percentage of hours worked remotely aligning with the highs of previous years. This shows a resilience in remote work preference within IT, despite a general industry shift back to office-based roles.

Ultimately, while the demand for fully remote IT roles may be easing, hybrid work continues to thrive, cementing itself as a strategic middle ground in attra

In conclusion, the evolving landscape of remote work in the IT sector demonstrates a clear trend toward hybrid arrangements, balancing flexibility with in-office presence. While the peak of fully remote roles may have passed, the sustained demand for at least partial remote options underlines the critical role flexibility plays in retaining skilled temporary IT talent. As companies seek to strike this balance, hybrid work is likely to remain a dominant and valuable model, ensuring that both employee preferences and business needs are met in an increasingly competitive market for tech professionals. For staffing firms and client buyers, offering hybrid setups can be a key differentiator in attracting top IT talent who seek both career growth and flexibility.
