Southeast Asia: A Strategic Photovoltaic Hub for Chinese enterprises

In recent years, Southeast Asia, with its close geographic location, large market potential and low investment cost, has become an important location for Chinese enterprises to go overseas, and new energy, internet, e-commerce, gaming and electronic products industries have all risen the trend of going to SEA. As the most representative industry in China’s manufacturing industry, photovoltaic companies also have an in-depth layout in SEA.

Key Players and Capacities in SEA’s Photovoltaic Industry

Currently, among 11 countries in SEA, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand are particularly the most important for China’s photovoltaic industry. China’s enterprises in SEA’s battery and module production capacity are more than 50GW, with an additional 26GW silicon wafer production capacity.

LONGi Green Energy, Trina Solar, Jinko Solar, JA Solar Technology, Canadian Solar, and other main material companies have more than one production base in SEA. Quartz sand, photovoltaic glass, inverters and other auxiliary materials, equipment companies also have business layouts in the region, and has formed an overseas integrated production capacity and a complete supply chain system.

Projected Growth and Dominance

By 2030, the production of photovoltaic cells and modules in SEA is expected to have 30% to 70% room for growth. Observation by country wise, Vietnam’s photovoltaic industry development in SEA is in an absolute leading position. The current cumulative installed capacity has reached 13GW, accounting for nearly 70% of the entire SEA region.

Challenges and Potential Obstacles Ahead

Overall, the expected value of photovoltaic installed capacity in SEA is as high as 72GW, and the potential is very considerable, but eventually the final proportion of cash is not as optimistic. Beforehand, SEA had more than 3.5GW of photovoltaic power station items eliminated, and items that are still in a shelved state are as high as 10GW. The anomaly rate (total load in operation plus the total load of removal and shelving) reached 42%.
