Nature-Based Solutions Set to Create 32 Million Jobs by 2030

December 13, 2024

Expanding investments in nature-based solutions (NbS) could lead to the creation of as many as 32 million jobs by 2030, according to a recent study by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). This potential growth underscores the role of NbS in tackling global environmental and economic challenges.

Currently, more than 60 million individuals worldwide are employed in activities associated with NbS. These efforts involve the sustainable management, restoration, conservation, and protection of various ecosystems, including terrestrial, marine, freshwater, and coastal environments.

With targeted funding and initiatives, NbS-related employment could see dramatic growth. Projections show the most significant increases in Africa, Latin America, and the Arab States, where the workforce could rise from 2.5 million to over 13 million by 2030. These regions could see their share of global NbS jobs grow from 5% to over 40%, reflecting a major shift in the global employment landscape.

IUCN emphasized the broader impact of NbS, stating, “When guided by a strong environmental, social, and economic framework like the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions, NbS becomes a powerful tool for addressing climate and biodiversity challenges while improving livelihoods and creating high-quality jobs.”

The report also highlights the importance of addressing skill gaps in the NbS workforce. Currently, most roles are classified as medium-skilled, but as NbS initiatives expand, demand for higher-skilled positions will rise. Investing in skills development will be essential to scale projects and improve job quality.

Conclusion

Nature-based solutions present a unique opportunity to address pressing global challenges while unlocking significant economic benefits. By investing in NbS, the world can create millions of sustainable jobs, particularly in regions with high growth potential like Africa, Latin America, and the Arab States. However, realizing this potential requires strategic efforts to close skill gaps, develop higher-skilled roles, and implement robust frameworks that ensure environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Embracing NbS not only helps tackle the interconnected crises of climate change and biodiversity loss but also fosters resilient livelihoods and stronger communities worldwide.
