Global Tech Workforce Sees High Turnover, Especially Among Younger Professionals

May 16, 2025

A significant portion of the global tech workforce has been on the move in recent years. According to recent findings by ISACA, a global association for IT professionals, one out of every three tech workers has switched jobs within the last two years. The primary motivator? A desire for better pay.

The trend is especially pronounced among younger professionals. Of those under the age of 35, 42% reported making a job move during that timeframe. In contrast, only a quarter of tech workers aged 55 and above reported doing the same.

When asked about the main reasons for their departure from previous roles, tech professionals identified several key motivators:

  • Higher salary expectations – 33%

  • Improved career advancement opportunities – 31%

  • More engaging and meaningful work – 25%

  • Healthier and more supportive workplace culture – 24%

  • Better healthcare and benefits – 11%

  • Layoffs, company closure, or redundancy – 9%

  • Unwillingness to relocate – 7%

For younger workers, salary remained the top driver. However, for the more senior cohort aged 55 and above, organizational culture took precedence over compensation.

The survey, which gathered insights from 7,726 IT professionals worldwide, also shed light on other key workplace dynamics:

  • Although just 18% of respondents said work-life balance initially drew them to the tech industry, 41% cited it as a major reason for staying in their current role.

  • 40% said the option for remote or hybrid work significantly contributed to their decision to remain at their company.

  • 37% pointed to their enjoyment of daily responsibilities as a factor in job satisfaction.

  • On the downside, 54% noted overwhelming workloads, and 43% mentioned extended working hours as leading causes of workplace stress.

  • Alarmingly, 37% of women in the field reported experiencing gender-based discrimination in the workplace.

Takeaway:

The tech industry continues to evolve, and so do the expectations of its workforce. While financial incentives remain a leading factor in career decisions, culture, work-life balance, and flexible work environments are becoming equally important—especially for retaining top talent. Organizations that want to reduce turnover and attract the next generation of innovators must prioritize not only competitive pay but also inclusive, meaningful, and balanced work experiences.
