The job search process is no easy task and it can be quite daunting trying to navigate the challenges associated with it. However, if you feel this way you’re not alone.
A couple of weeks ago, we launched a Linkedin poll asking our audience about the challenges they face during the job search process. We had over 557 insightful responses and in this article, we will discuss just how job-seekers can overcome these challenges.
Challenge #1: No idea where to look
According to 9% of respondents, some job-seekers are puzzled on where they should look for opportunities. Whether you’re a recent college graduate trying to enter the workforce, or already have experience, it can feel like an endless search if you don’t know where to track down jobs within your industry of choice.
What can you do?
Look at the countless job boards as a positive rather than a negative. Make sure you’re searching on credible boards, like Linkedin or Indeed. It can also be helpful to narrow your job search based on work-setting, job responsibilities, and benefits/compensation. If you still feel stuck, you can reach out to a recruiter. Recruiters have access to opportunities that are not posted on typical job board sites and they are more than willing to guide you through the process.
Challenge #2: No interview requests
Based on our poll, the top challenge faced by 41% of job seekers is receiving no interview requests. We understand how this might trigger feelings of hopelessness, especially when you’re dedicating much of your time to the search.
What can you do?
A big reason you might not be receiving interview requests is because your resume or cover letter are in need of a refresh. When it comes to your resume and cover letter, “one-size-fits all” may not be the right approach. Instead, try tweaking these documents to be geared toward each job you plan on applying for. Resumes go through an ATS system most of the time, so if you include keywords, it is most likely to get picked up by the hiring manager. Once you’ve perfected your resume and cover letter, have a friend or family member take a look at it for review. If you’re working with a recruiter, they can also help you perfect your resume.
Challenge #3: Not receiving any offers
Ranking in as the runner-up poll response, 39% of job seekers say that their biggest challenge is they’re not receiving any offers. Like the previous challenge, this can be incredibly frustrating and discouraging, especially if you’re going through interview after interview.
What can you do?
The most underrated yet valuable action a job seeker can do after an interview is send a thank you email. There are candidates who miss the mark on following up and put themselves at a disadvantage. If you do this, it will not only keep your name top of mind for the interviewer, but it shows that you are genuinely interested in the position. Gratitude can go a long way, so be sure to follow up in a timely manner.
Challenge #4: Lack in network connections
Last but not least, 11% of poll respondents say that their lack of network connections poses the biggest challenge for them. Sometimes, it can be nerve-wracking to muster up the courage to attend career fairs or other in-person networking events.
What can you do?
If you don’t want to attend career fairs or networking events, you’re in luck. In today’s world, technology is everything and social media can connect you to more people than ever before. Take the initiative to clean up your Linkedin and create a personal brand for yourself. You can allocate time each day to research industry professionals and see if they’re willing to attend a virtual lunch or set up a call with you. One connection always leads to another, so be sure to leverage the power of social media and networking.
