5 Things To Do After The Interview

July 31, 2019

After going through all steps in the interview process (phone screen/in-person interview), you may be wondering the best way to proceed after you’ve met with the hiring manager. There are many pros and cons during this process, but don’t be stressed. We’ve prepared the best tips for turning your next career opportunity into your future job!

1. Send a Thank-you email

After finishing the interview with a potential employer, it is essential to send out a “Thank you email” within 24 hours after the meeting. Sending a thank-you email not only shows your appreciation of the employer taking the time to interview you. But it also reminds them that you are serious about the job. Here are the top three things you should include in the email:

  1. What did you learn about the company, position, and the employer?
  2. What makes you stand out from other candidates. (Highlight your strengths that will benefit you to get this position.)
  3. Provide ways you can contribute to the company and your goals for the future.

2. Schedule a debrief session

Before you make any final decisions regarding a potential job opportunity, it’s crucial to identify the pros and cons after your interview. Set aside some time to have a debrief session with yourself, giving you a chance to refocus on the task at hand. We recommend centering your discussion around your first impressions on the job, company, and overall experience during the interview.

Your interview debrief session should include the following:

  1. Weighing the pros and cons of the position, interview, and the company.
  2. Noting any additional questions asked by the hiring manager that was not listed in the job description.
  3. Arranging the best time for a follow-up email (if necessary)
  4. Considering your options on accepting the job and the potential career opportunity this offer will present to you.

3. Follow up after a week

After the interview, the employer will usually ask, “Do you have any questions?” This is where you may ask about the next steps of the interview process. Usually, the employer will tell you a specific time frame of when you can expect to hear back from HR. Our experienced recruiters suggest following up after a week if you don’t hear back from the hiring manager within their suggested time frame.

4. Continue to job search

After you proceed with follow-ups and weighing the pros and cons, continue to seek other job opportunities. Keeping your options open is essential in landing your dream job as you never know where your next opportunity will present itself. Networking is also necessary during your job search process. So, continue to work toward your career success by applying for jobs and making new connections.

5. Attend networking events

Searching for more local networking events in your industry will also open the door to additional job opportunities for you. You don’t want to limit yourself to only one potential job. Networking provides you with a broader understanding of open positions available while you are connecting with like-minded individuals with similar interests. Sometimes the best opportunities are found through a brief discussion. You may be surprised by the results. Here are five sources to help you get started in your networking research:

  1. Google Search
  2. Facebook Group
  3. Linkedin Group
  4. Eventbrite
  5. Meetup
