In the year 2020, virtual interviews have become the new normal. Many companies have turned their in-person meetings to video interviews through online platforms such as zoom and skype. Video interviews have become popular in recent years due to the hiring process’s efficiency and effectiveness.
There are pros and cons of video interviews. If you are comfortable with video calls or facetime, video interviews might be natural. However, for some job seekers video interviews could be a stressful and nerve-wracking step.
Our Cross Border Services team recruiters, Carol Huo, and Esther Hao have shared some practical interview tips for job seekers:
Carol Huo, Cross Border Recruiter
Tip 1: Be professional
Be Prepared with job requirements, company’s history, and business culture.
Tip 2: Remember the time zone
Assure the invitation to interview is adjusted for any time differences for the company you are interviewing for.
Tip 3: Test your technology to confirm that you are ready to go
Check internet connectivity, this includes testing your camera and microphone.

Tip 4: Make sure to have a copy of the resume next to you
Do not try to type on your laptop while talking; this could be distracting for the interviewer.
Tip 5: Look straight into the camera when you are talking
Try to be as natural and warm as possible. One helpful way is to look into the camera and put a bright color Post-it next to the camera so that you can look in the right direction.
Tip 6: Make sure to wait and pause when you finish talking
Keep in mind that there might be a delay because of the internet connection. So make sure you allow a few extra seconds in between responses.
