Gartner Study Points To Big Data And Cloud Computing’s Role In Energy And Utilities Industry

6月 16, 2016

The IT landscape continues to rapidly grow, particularly for companies in the energy and utilities industry where both the public and private sector are embracing new technologies, relating to big data and cloud computing to improve operational efficiency.

In fact, according to a recent Gartner report, “…10 Technology Trends in Energy and Utilities,” both of these sectors will continue to implement technology solutions based on an array of developments within big data and cloud computing, aimed at enhancing smart city technologies. As a result, this trend points the way for a highly-skilled, trained, and educated workforce to lead out the tasks in the following areas:

Big Data

Anything and everything having to do with big data in pursuing “smart grid development” will rely increasingly on IT as well as Operational Technology (OT) staffing; this, to handle all the advanced infrastructure, such as:

“…remote asset monitoring, event avoidance and self-healing networks. In addition to significantly impacting data volume, smart grid initiatives will produce a different variety of data, such as temporal, spatial, transactional, streaming, structured and unstructured.”

Cloud Computing and SaaS

The utility industry may lag behind in incorporating the use of the cloud because of “security and reliability concerns.” However, the move to adopt across-the-board applications and SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) offerings are led by cooperatives, transmission operators and smaller co-ops and municipalities.

“IT and OT Convergence”

With rapid developments in the technology for monitoring existing equipment and systems, the utilities industry will look to a bigger investment model that will include room for IT and OT personnel.
