Advice on Hiring Bi-Cultural Talent

5月 6, 2020

Based on the Cross Border Staffing Services we provide, Comrise believes that selecting the right local hire is a proven strategy to achieve success. Comrise Marketing Analyst, Jo Wang says, “It is critical for businesses to transform and align their corporate culture, policies, and procedures with those of its clients in the local market.”

However, In order to achieve long-term success in any business entering a new market, you must be willing to place the right people that match the open positions available.

In this article, we will share our expertise in the best practices of cross border hiring to help you identify the right talent for your business in the U.S. market.

Culture & Work Environment

In Chinese culture, employers always emphasize cooperation and prefer to view employees as groups rather than individuals. Because of this, teamwork and interpersonal relationships are fundamental to their company culture. However, in the United States, the majority of organizations encourage employees to be themselves and think independently. So it is important to consider the culture and work environment before you place a candidate in a different location. As experts in hiring bi-cultural candidates for our clients in the United States and China, we value collectivism as a very important work ethic to have. If your candidates are not willing to work with their colleagues, whether local or global, they are most likely not the right candidate to consider for that particular role.

Strong Skill Set & Flexibility

If you are seeking bi-cultural candidates for your company headquartered in the United States or China, it is of much importance to ensure the candidates are open to new ideas and receptive when it comes to adhering to local best practices. Proper mindset and listening skills are also an essential part of any job,  as the employer will most likely select a candidate who can cooperate with headquarters on job requirements, culture, and local best practices.

Employers need to be aware of the ability of talent and if they are a good fit for the company culture. Employee turnover is costly. Hiring based on shared values and cultural beliefs leads to winning results.

Time Zone & Scheduling

Make sure the candidate is aware of time zone differences as some expectations may be centered around meetings for local or global teams, meaning that meetings may be scheduled during the night time or in the early morning.  Overall, ensure that the right hire is someone who understands the job requirements, possesses the proper skill set, and is flexible for scheduling across different time zones (if necessary).

Sourcing top talent in the local and global markets is not an easy thing to do especially for multinational companies. At Comrise, we help clients to address these concerns and prepare qualified talent to meet the needs of the job requirements.
