6 Ways To Prepare For Your Interview

7月 16, 2019

So you are one step closer to getting your dream job. But are you ready for the in-person interview? In part one, we discussed 7 Ways To Prepare For Your Next Phone Interview. Now, we are getting into the essentials for acing your in-person interview.

Interviews, in general, can be nerve-wracking as you balance interview questions and make a good first impression. In the working world, it is crucial to not only dress for success but prepare accordingly. We’ve provided 6 Ways To Prepare For Your Interviewbelow.

1. First Impression- Business Professional Attire

First impressions are critical for your success during an interview. Reduce your stress by preparing an outfit ahead of time. There is an unwritten rule when it comes to dressing for an interview. The interviewer’s first impression of you is your appearance and how you dress for the professional setting. Your attire can say a lot about how serious about the job. So it’s important to dress professionally.

We recommend dressing in business professional attire. See Example below.

2. Confirm Your Interview

Confirmation is just as important as preparing for the interview. You want to know as much information as you can before you go in for the on-site interview. It is the candidate’s responsibility to find out the following information:

3. Prepare Interview Questions

During an in-person interview, it is of much importance to research the company beforehand. The interview also includes preparing relevant interview questions regarding the company and current job opportunity. The hiring manager will also ask you challenging questions related to your work experience and skills. Preparation is key to acing the interview!

Here’s how you can prepare for the interview questions:

4. Map Your Route

Reduce your anxiety by mapping out your route a few days before the interview. Give yourself plenty of time to navigate traffic, tolls, and your means of transportation (i.e., car, public transit. Put the address into your GPS the night before or, if you are using Google Maps, save the address, so the only thing you have to worry about is pressing “GO.”

We recommend giving yourself plenty of time for the big day. Set your alarm and arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled interview. Here is the checklist you can use to prepare the night before.

5. Showcase Your Portfolio Or Writing Samples

If the job you applied for requires you to submit creative works such as creative writing or graphic design examples, you should definitely bring them! You want to showcase how your skills and experiences can contribute and add value to the company. Believe or not, not everyone can do creative work, and you can’t teach someone how to become creative.

6. Be Yourself

Hiring managers usually read through your resume prior to your in-person interview. Most of the time, they are looking for unique traits and characteristics about you that are not listed on your resume. Everyone gets nervous before an interview, but don’t forget to smile and be yourself!

Pro tip: Stand out from other candidates by talking about something you are passionate about (outside of your job) like your hobbies and interests. The hiring manager will appreciate your honesty and will be interested to learn more about you as a person.
