Recently, researchers analyzed the growth of biotechnology industry worldwide over the past 40 years, revealing that two of the three largest clusters globally are located in the United States: “Northern California” (i.e., the San Francisco Bay Area) and “Massachusetts” (i.e., Boston/Cambridge). The third is the South Kanto region in Japan (Tokyo).
What did these regions do right?
Boston/Cambridge and the San Francisco Bay Area have consistently appeared in GEN’s annual list of the top 10 U.S. biopharmaceutical industry resources. Each year, GEN ranks the most competitive regions in the U.S. based on their ability to attract leading life sciences companies, businesses, and institutions.

- Boston/Cambridge, Massachusetts: The region is focused on life sciences with ongoing economic incentives. Recent developments include a proposal for a $1 billion reauthorization plan and company expansions, despite some layoffs.
- San Francisco Bay Area, California: A major hub with a high number of jobs, though facing challenges with several companies announcing layoffs. Astellas Pharma recently invested in a new innovation center.
- BioHealth Capital Region (Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C.): Significant investments in new facilities for next-generation sequencing and biotechnology, including a $300 million AstraZeneca plant.
- New York/New Jersey: High in NIH funding and lab space. The region continues to grow in patents and venture capital investments.
- San Diego Area, California: Increased venture capital, with Eli Lilly expanding its presence through a significant acquisition.
- Greater Philadelphia Area: Strong focus on cell and gene therapy, with a jump in venture capital investment despite lower recent figures.
- Los Angeles/Orange County, California: Slight decline in employment rankings, but still significant in NIH funding, patents, and venture capital.
- North Carolina: Novo Nordisk is investing heavily in new facilities and job creation, driven by demand for its diabetes and obesity treatments.
- Chicago Area, Illinois: Continues to see growth in life sciences employment, now with 91,000 jobs.
- Seattle and Greater Puget Sound, Washington: Steady in NIH funding and venture capital, with a growing number of patents and jobs in the life sciences sector.
