Have you worked with a recruiter to find a job before? At Comrise, we have our experienced recruiter that can help you to get started! Our senior recruiter Latish Salianhas interview tips to share that will get you prepared for your next interview! Here are the 10 Do’s and Don’ts during a phone interview:
1. Do use hiring manager’s title
By using the hiring manager’s title, it shows you respect them. Remember that they are your potential supervisor; they are not your friends. Only call them by their first name if they ask you. You should always call them by Mr. or Ms. with their last name.
2. Do avoid and limit noises that might cause interview disruption
Don’t smoke, chew gum, eat, or drink. The interviewer can only evaluate your interview performance and how you present yourself through your voice — so making sure to avoid and limit noises at all cause.
3. Do keep a glass of water in front of you
Sometimes the interview might last longer than you thought. It is best to keep a glass of water in front of you in case if you are thirsty or if your throat tickles.
4. Do smile
Smiling will project a positive image to the listener and will change the tone of your voice. It can also be helpful to stand out during the interview; the interviewer could tell your enthusiasm and energy through your voice.
5. Do focus, listen, and enunciate
It’s essential to focus on the interview, and that can be harder on the phone than in-person. Be sure to listen to the question, ask for clarification if you’re not sure what the interviewer is asking, and speak slowly, carefully, and clearly when you respond. It’s fine to take a few seconds to compose your thoughts before you answer.
6. Don’t interrupt the interviewer
You should never interrupt the interviewer when they are talking. Wait for your turn to speak.
7. Do take your time
It’s perfectly acceptable to take a moment or two to collect your thoughts. You may ask for a min or two to gather your thoughts before you speak. It is better to have a well-thought process first and talk than just stumbling through the interview.
8. Do take notes
It’s hard to remember what you discussed after the fact, so take brief notes during the interview.
9. Do give short answers
It’s important to stay focused on the questions and your responses. Only answer to the questions that interviewer asks.
10. Do remember your goals
Remember your goals is to set up a face to face interview. At the end of the interview, it is important to thank the interviewer for their time and ask them about the next step. By asking this, you can get an answer if it’s possible to meet them in person.
