Our Top 20 Interview Tips
Landing an interview is an important process of finding a solid position that will fuel your career. Most interview tips are genuinely based on common sense, but it never hurts to look through some tips to make sure you haven't overlooked anything. Comrise has taken the time to compile a list of some of our favorite interview tips that we give to candidates going on interviews with our clients. Here are our Top 20 Tips:
- Confirm the time, date and location of the interview and the name of interviewer before the interview day. Be sure that you know how to get to the interview site. Driving to the office beforehand is a great way to prevent yourself from being late, if you can do so.
- Get moving! This tip is one of our favorites. Before the interview, go for a walk, run, exercise, or whatever moves you. Also be sure to eat a solid breakfast before your meeting. It is important to be prepared and focused.
- Be early but not TOO early. It is best to show up 10 to 15 minutes early at the interview site.
- Focus all of your concentration on your interviewer. Be ready to answer questions when asked.
- Bring a list of references with you, just in case. If you are asked to bring certificates, documents, etc., be sure to have them ready with you.
- Be proactive! Write down and practice possible questions/answers you will be asked during the interview.
- Throughout your interview, speak when spoken to. Your interviewer should ask if you have any questions or will ask you to elaborate on your answers when necessary.
- Be enthusiastic! Research the company before going into your interview and be excited for the possibility of working there.
- You know what you’ve done best. Have a few specific achievements in mind to bring up in your interview that may impress the interviewer.
- Ask the interviewer what they would like to hear about. If not stated, ask whether they would like to hear about job responsibilities, projects, examples, work experiences, etc. You want to interact with your interviewer to demonstrate communication skills.
- Bring a spare resume
- Always make eye contact with the interviewer. He/she will look for this as a sign of good communication skills.
- Dress for success! If you are unsure of what type of dress code the business has, go with business professional to make a good, solid impression.
- You may be asked about your weaknesses in your interview, but be sure to have an example of a weakness and also explain how you have overcome the weakness. You will probably also be asked about your strengths. Make sure you can articulate your strengths without boasting or bragging.
- Be sure to have reasons for why you left your last employer. Interviewers sometimes like to know what happened with your prior experiences. Give intelligent answers but try not to criticize a former employer.
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions such as “What are you most hoping to find in the person you hire?? “What would be my first priorities on the job?? and “How will I know if I am successful in this job?
- It is okay to feel nervous about your interview but try to be confident in your experience and abilities.
- Conduct yourself in a professional manner throughout the interview. Throughout the interview process, you will see if there is room to be informal with your interviewer.
- Be honest throughout your interview. Just like you wouldn’t lie on your resume, interviewers will be not be impressed by unrealistic answers and information.
- Some interviewers will give you feedback regarding how you’ve presented yourself throughout your interview. Use each experience to go into your next interview even more prepared.
